Istria transforms into a haven for sports enthusiasts during the spring, with the highlight being the ultra trail event known as the 100 Miles of Istria. This challenging race attracts participants from around the globe and serves as a qualifier for the esteemed Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc. The 100-mile course, recognized as the toughest and most stunning, weaves through Istria's diverse landscape—from Labin, over the majestic Učka mountain, through forests, charming medieval towns, and rocky trails, culminating in the coastal city of Umag. Runners face a demanding elevation gain of 6,390 meters, making it essential for competitors to be well-prepared. The second longest option, a 128 km course, features a daunting initial ascent to Učka, joining the 100 miles route afterward. While its 4,940 meters of elevation might seem manageable, the rocky terrain and nighttime mountain crossing considerably increase the difficulty. A shorter 67 km course serves as a great introduction for those looking to try the longer distances, and a 10-hour timed trail starting from Motovun provides a less strenuous but still rewarding experience through picturesque landscapes. Each course promises a unique adventure for trail running aficionados.
