The Spence Mountain Run features two challenging events: a 50k and a 30k, primarily taking place on rugged single-track trails. Runners will encounter technical sections filled with tree roots, rocks, and steep drops, particularly during the ascent to Spence Mountain’s summit, which both distances tackle. The race begins with a demanding hike up a double black diamond trail, spanning 2.5 miles with a vertical gain of 1,200 feet, followed by a second summit climb of around 1,500 feet over 5 miles. The 30k course serves as the foundation for the 50k, which adds an additional 13 miles, extending the overall distance to between 30 and 32 miles due to the densely wooded terrain and new trails potentially affecting distance accuracy. Runners should be prepared for a tough, technical course that challenges both their endurance and skill.
