The Hatcher Pass Marathon, set in the stunning Matanuska-Susitna valley of Alaska, unfolds in an area celebrated for its natural beauty, attracting outdoor enthusiasts year-round. Once the winter snow clears, the marathon showcases a challenging course with roughly 3,900 feet of elevation gain. The initial 25 miles are a test of endurance, featuring a mix of gradual climbs, steep inclines, and switchbacks, culminating in a thrilling downhill stretch toward the finish at the iconic Hatcher Pass Lodge. The route follows Hatcher Pass Road from Willow to Summit Lake, although the distance exceeds the traditional 26.2 miles, making it ineligible for Boston qualification. In addition to the marathon, the event features a 50-mile race, which consists of two back-to-back marathon distances. It begins at Hatcher Pass Lodge and heads to Willow before participants turn around and tackle the uphill course again. Teams can also enter a relay division, with members running segments of the marathon. All participants can enhance their experience by opting for charity bibs, allowing them to support a nonprofit while running—though fundraising commitments must be honored to participate fully.
